  • Settle an issue please, can a T.blondi jump?

As the title says. Someone on an unrelated forum has suggested his giant bird eater can jump great distances and hangs upside down from his ceiling amongst some of the b.s he's spouting. I've suggested his comments are ludicrous, but I want to be able to back up my argument with facts.

Hahaha...sounds like one of those chain emails about the camel spiders from a few years ago. Jumping on the ceiling? That's a goodun..
T Blondi are terrestrial so they are a primarily ground dwelling species. In addition their huge bulk means that a fall of only a short distance could kill it, so the likelyhood of finding one willing to risk it's life by hanging upside down on a ceiling is daft to say the least.
*You probably know most of these facts yourself anyway but I can't think of any other way to prove it than basic physics haha

Here is a cut n paste of the posters comments:-

      his

      mine

That spider has found a bad home.Im glad there is no daddy long legs in it. I have a bird eater she can jump a long way even stick on my roof, but at least she can not fit in car mirrows.Even eat a stray cat once.Likes rats alive best. Got a pet mex. red nee to no touch game... whot other pets you got chum...?

I hate hijacking a thread but you are talking crap! A Theraphosa blondi has taken on a stray cat and devoured it!? I think not. Live rodents are a formidable foe for any tarantula as they have sharp teeth and claws. Rats are wiley things and would almost certainly attack the tarantula. But a cat!!??? You mean a stray cat with extremely sharp teeth and needle like claws. Bullshit. One swipe of it's front paw would almost certainly rupture its opsithoma (rump) causing its hemolymph to leak everywhere. But I'm also sure you are well aware that feeding live mammals and birds to exotic pets are illegal in this country? Feeder insects are different.

This was the reply to my comment

Your wrong on that have you ever seen a big bird eater and picked it up 2 hands and some, there is a place in england that did sell the monster ones, they attack when things sleep, have you got any pets please reply...Have you ever been bitten by a big spider and rushed to hospital,or do you just read books,chum?...

      and my follow up

Yes I have and by that I'm guessing you are referring to the Theraphosa blondi more comonly known as the Goliath Bird Eating Spider.

The Goliath Bird Eating Spider has the most irritable urticating hairs and handling the spider would give the spider a reason to flick these. Why would I risk getting these kicked at me? Also, why risk dropping the spider? Which would certainly kill it if dropped from a height. Being able to handle a spider does not make you manly and hard.

      Surely you mean England?

Who was the main customer? 1950's and 60's B-movie producers?

Apart from some species of spider and tarantula, most spiders wait and ambush there prey which walks close to the tarantulas lair, the funnel web spider pit or as in most cases, gets tangled in a web.

Yes, a two year old Brachypelma smithi, and I'm sure you know what that is, right?

Fortunatley not. I've had the urticating hairs flicked at me but as anyone in the hobby knows, a bite from even the largest tarantula can be treated with an antihistamine cream and unless you have a serious allergy, hospitalisation is not necessary.

Now that just being stupid, reading books? Maybe you want to try reading one. Mainly a dictionary.

Not the type of idiot we need in the hobby. Kind of like the muppetts who own pitbull / staffy type dogs just for fighting.

Hi Andrew, adult Blondis are not what you call particularly active, most of our's very rarely attempt any more exercise than a walk over their hide and the occasional stretch up the side of their tank, but of course, that doesn't mean they're not fast when it comes to feeding etc, they're as fast as any other T.

My boyfriend had a blondi that would hang upside down from the roof of her viv, she wasn't very big at that point though, and the substrate was pretty thick so she didn't have far to fall.

I've tried and tried again but I just can't seem to fit the cat in my blondi enclosure, perhaps I'm going about this the wrong way. I'll try leaving my blondi free range in the garden and get back to you on any situations I see with stray cats.

The biggest jump I've seen with Blondis recently is the prices lol.
