  • H lividum and H minax behavior

    Hi all

Some of my lividums and minax showed some strange behavior. Some closed up their burrows and are sitting on the ground. Does this indicate male behavior ? They don't have male pedipalps and are about two years old so I would think that they are still juveniles. Is this normal for the Haplopelma genius to do this ?

    Thanx

My H lividum doesnt burrow, she seals up her hole she made under a piece of bark and just sits there, it's an adult and has never excavated her enclosure in anyway apart from a bit of silk here n there.

It really depends on the individual spider. I have kept Haplopelma for years. Some burrow, some dont. All of them spin huge amounts of webbing. In the wild they tend to seal their burrow from the elements and then open them at night to sit at the entrance. I dont think it is an indictaion of male behaviour. Have you sexed them at all?

I haven't tried to sex them. Difficult to get skin after a molt. They have always burrowed, Just recently they closed up their burrows. I moved them to bigger containers with deeper substrate and so far they use the burrows I made. I don't see any male pedipalps and they are about 2 years old. Some have reached the blue colour and some are still that brownish colour.

          Thnx guys and gals

at 2 years old i would think that the bue ones are the sub adult females wich the blue will increase with molts and maturity.
and the brown ones are possibly sub adult males that never get the blue colour they stay a mottled browny colour and much more slender legs.
