Hi, I have just joined the forum. I live in North Lincs, UK and after quite a few years of being interested in tarantulas, I have finally decided to acquire my first. After much reading up, I have decided on a B.Albopilosum.

It will probably be a few weeks/months before I actually bring my little 8-legged friend home. Just waiting for my winter fuel bill to turn up and having also just been given a paycut at work I thought I had better get those out of the way first and go spider hunting after Easter!

In the meantime though, I found the BTS and thought it would be the best place to be to get lots of helpful info! I am in fact visiting my BF over this weekend (he lives not far from Bedford) so we're going to pop into Super Reps and look at the inmates as I've read they have a good range of Tarantulas. I'll pick up a good spider care book while I'm at it.

Any advice from you experts would be much appreciated!

Welcome to the BTS Forum. Its good to see new keepers coming on board.

Ask as many questions as you like and we will try to help. Dont forget to consider joining the BTS as a full member to recieve our full colour journal.
and get access to over 20 back issues on line. Worth considering but in the meantime get involved and once again welcome.

Hi Sarah, welcome to the forum! Here is deffinately a great place to start learning about T's, all members are really friendly and helpful. If your looking for a good book I'd recomend the Tarantula Keeper's Guide; it's really helped me a lot since I got my frist T. I hope you can sort your bills and get your tanrantula asap, although it will give you a chance to get read-up and prepare yourself before you get addicted to collecting T's for life!

Thanks for the warm welcome, everyone! I've no doubt I will become a spider addict very quickly, from what I've read and programmes watched on TV, I find them fascinating. My other love is tropical fish, which I started keeping about 18 years ago.

Matt, thanks for the advice on the book, I'll look out for that one.

Well, as planned, my other half and I went to Super Reps in Bedford on Friday. It turned out they had three Curly Hairs in stock so I had a look at them all. It was great seeing them in the flesh, so to speak. Then the woman brought out a few different ones for me to see, one of which was a red phase Chile Rose. It was stunning and even my other half, who had previously been none too keen on me adding a spider to my zoo, said, "Aww, it's lovely, can't you get one like that instead?"

So to cut a long story short I put a deposit on the Chile Rose! Bit of a change, but my interest is developing rapidly on a daily basis so I imagine I will still get the Curly Hair before too long. Addicted already! The shop are holding my new pet for me for a few weeks while I wait for the dreaded gas and electric bill and as soon as that's out of the way, I can get the rest of the equipment and return to collect the spider.

The Chile Rose had actually just been fed when I went into the shop and was feasting on a huge cricket! They said it had recently moulted, about 2 weeks ago and it looked as if it is probably about three-quarters adult size. I'm so excited!
