  • Aphonopelma Iodius

Hi, does anyone on here keep the Aphonoplema sp.Iodius? i have a sling measuring roughly 1.5cm. It is kept in a small test pot with deep substrate which is misted every week, i found it will only accept small pre killed crickets and compared to my P.Formosa of the same size is quite timid towards food. It is kept in a warm room with temperature drops at night. I was just wondering as i have had said sling since kettering last year and it has never shed?

Just wondered if this was more to do with the sp or something im doing (eg. not warm enough etc)

hi mate, these are hardy little things!
i have 8, and most of them i had from quite small sizes.

my first two i added a tiny bit of water weekly as you do and a prekilled cricket for a while, but i find they do soon work up the courage to take on decent sized crickets, and once that happens (maybe just over 1cm in size) they are sometimes voracious when hungry...running away at first but not long after siezing their prey with enthusiasm.

they seem to do ok with room temperature, but slightly warmer is probably preferred. i've got all mine in a heated cabinet now, and they've started growing at a fair old clip. in roughly 2+ years they start to take on adult-ish characteristics, ceasing to be dull little brown things and becoming rather beautiful spiders with legs that alternate from dark grey/black to a deep golden tan and then back to dark again.

belated congrats on what will, after you get used to its slow paced, become a rewarding addition to your collection!

Aphonopelma are known for their slowness in reaching maturity, but i think they're worth it!

Thanks james, yeah well the rest fo my collection is in the heated room and they all seem active and shed well. It may be better for me to keep a small cage heated then instead of the whole room....hmm.

A good friend gave me two A. iodius spiderlings last BTS show, and they're both still going strong. I don't mist them, but I do pour water in a corner of their substrate. They are certainly slow growers, but they are also voracious feeders. Very entertaining spiders indeed. They're kept in one of my heated cabinets
