  • Bugworld!

Bugworld is a museum in Liverpool where kids can get up close and personal with, well, bugs.

The most exciting parts for me were of course the spiders. 3 tarantula's - L. parahybana, B. smithi, and P. metallica. I love the fact that the L. parahybana, judging purely by what ive heard of them was not yet full grown (about 6 or 7 inches id say), yet a lady was very scared of it. When I informed her that it had a few inches to go yet she literally ran away. I must stress none of the Ts were part of the touchy feely up close section by the way. Managed to get a couple of pics, and especially good one of the P. metallica, which was difficult as it was hiding. These photo's to follow, just as soon as my phone stops playing silly beggars and uploads them to comp.

For now, I just thought id share some of our pics holdng some roaches, millipedes and a giant snail (hope you dont mind, I know its tarantula society but thought you might like to have a look)

Me holding some roaches (the last picture is my 18 month old son getting friendly with the roaches which were his favourite thing there, he kept saying wow wow at them. I sense a roach colony joining the collection of Ts once he is older lol)

Here is my daughter with her favourites (apart form the Ts which obviously she couldnt handle)

And me with a lovely millipede, love these guys lol

Thanks for having a look guys. Just wanted to let you all know of this fab museum and what a good time we had there!

ooohh it's a moderators nightmare ..... handling pictures ..... off topic .... an stuff

Looks like you had a good day out, i love roaches (have the "hissers" and the "giant cave roach" here in abundance) and when back in the house in England my son had a 4ft "mini eco system" tank with roaches, milipedes, hermit crabs, woodlice, springtails etc, fascinating to watch.

Nice to see you doing the "education bit" even if it did make the woman run a mile ...
A psycologist of time past (name escapees me) once wrote.....
"little understanding and little education is the possible start of a phobia"
and i think that lady may be "on the verge"

look forward to Spider piccies if possible.

Oh that looks a great place to visit! Is that a Hermit Crab or Giant Snail with the cabbage? Can't make it out on my phone.

Nice to see the youngsters having a great time and hopefully in the future they wont run away in fear like the lady did.
Looks like a fun place to vist

Oooh, didn't think about handling pics cos it wasn't Ts we were handling lol, apologies Colin!
Wow, that sounds brilliant the 4ft "mini eco-system", my son would love that.
Im the kind of person who goes to a museum and ends up with various tourists and kids following me around cos I sound like I know what I'm talking about! Secretly I don't particularly but I combine what knowledge I have with reading the signs up next to things and im good at explaining things cos Im so used to the kids asking me things. There is a job going at this place and I have put an application in (just coming to the end of my final year exams in uni, so looking for a job anyway), so hopefully soon if I get it I really will get to be knowledgeable! And also will get to help look after the 3 Ts they have!

Larry, its a giant snail sitting on a leaf!

Got my phone to work so the rest of the pics will be on in a moment!

Does anyone know anything about roaches? How to keep them and that?

Sorry about the size of them, cant work out how to make them smaller. and sorry if they not that good quality. I dont think they're too bad though for being taken with a mobile from behind glass!

Thank you so much. Looking at these care sheets seems to be fairly simple. definitely something we'll consider! Do they breed naturally if you keep a colony? Defo an idea to keep the boy happy (if they start breeding and I end up with millions of the things, can I feed them to Rio? (the sub adult A. chalcodes)

No problems about the "handling pics" i was having a laugh, and you've made it up with some tarantula pictures so it's all ok now
You could resize your images in a graphics package (photoshop, corel or any free software etc) before uploading to Photobucket (800x600 is a nice size)

You can just throw a load of hissers in a tub with substrate and a log and they'll breed if there's food available and it's warm enough. And yes, you can feed them to your spiders.

No problems on the forum links Chris, they're informative and not a case of slandering someone on another forum which we dont allow at all.

Thanks Colin, I'll give it a go next time I have some pics and see how I get on (im rubbish with technology!)

Well, I think our next purchase may be some hissers then. They are so friendly and I enjoyed the experience of holding them. And just watching them. Think Id have to hide the fact that I was feeding them to the Ts from my son though, heehee, not sure if feeding one child's pet to the other's is very emotionally/psychologically supportive of me at their age!

I'll update you all when I do get some!

I think all you need to do is feed and keep on the warm side and they do the rest

As adults their exoskeleton is to tough for most Tarantulas to penertrate but the young ones are ok for feeders.

If anyone is ever in our small corner of England, come to an Invicta roadshow, on our Encounters table you can hold Gecko's, Corn snakes, Carpet pythons,Whites tree frogs, hissing and deathshead Cockroaches, giant stick insects, Emperor Scorpions, Giant millepedes & land snails.

Places like bugworld are excellent and are always worth a visit, i have never been to bugworld but Invicta did help them recently in puchasing some Nephila edulis.

Photo's attached showing roadshows the second shows me at the encounters table
