  • Reindeer moss...to use or not to use?

Hi all, I have scoured the internet trying to find out whether or not there are any issues with regards using reindeer moss as a decorative substrate in a tarantula vivarium, I can only find information about sphagnum moss (which I already knew was fine). Has anybody ever used reindeer moss in their setups? Is it ok to use with tarantulas and other inverts such as scorpions and mantids? Any advice/comments would be greatly appreciated! Many thanks..Dave

A quick search doesn't reveal much, other than it is used to make an alcohlic beverage......

I'd stick with the tried and true Sphangum moss.

'Raindeer moss' is actually a Cladonia lichen - a symbiotic union of algae and fungus. Ironically it will go mouldy in a humid tarantula tank, and light levels are unlikely to be high enough to keep it alive. Save your money

Thanks for that Richard, as it happens I've got some left over from my airplant decorations (hence wondering if I could use it in the vivarium), but, on the basis it will probably go mouldy I think I'll just leave it on my airplants
