  • Reccomended species?

I've been thinking recently about getting some more T's. I've had my b.smithi for a while and really like him. he was a diddy sling with no colour when I got him. Bless.

I am hoping to get to the Leeds show coming up soon and hoping to pick a new friend or two up while I'm there. I've also promised my daughter a T too.

I need slow, preferably docile species. Has anyone got any suggestions as to what to look for?
Boris's Diary - written by me, he might have 8 legs but he's not big enough to press the keys yet.

Even in the slower, more docile, genus they will be the odd individual that will go against the grain so be prepared for a change in charactor of any spider you purchase that originally seems "chilled out"

You could look for any of the Brachypelma, Grammostola, Euathlus type ... most species within these genus could be classed as docile, although the brachypelma are more inclined to flick hairs occasionally.

My choices for your second spider .....

Grammostola porteri / rosea (whatever colour form you like the look of)
    Grammostola pulchripes
    Grammostola grossa
    Grammostola sp "Concepcion"

    Brachypelma albopilosum
    Brachypelma auratum
    Brachypelma vagans
    Brachypelma emilia

Euathlus sp "blue" or "red" or "green" or polka dot whatever you like the look of.
Don't forget to learn what you can, when you can, where you can.

I never realised Euathlus sp blue are a docile species. I found some on TSS but they're wild caught. I would prefer a captive bred one, it just seams nicer that way. I'll have to cross my fingers see what turns up at the Leeds fair.

      Thanks for the advice Colin.

You will find the leeds show is preeetty damn good, and you are sure to pick up some great bargains. I find that some avic's are a good fairly docile tarantula and can be a display spider. Avicularia Avicularia are a good choice and so are Avic Metallica (watch out though they are sniper accurate if they decide to shoot crap at you)
        Tarantulas kept:

I do like the look of Avic's, but I thought they were on the speedy side?

I think it completely depends on the avic tbh. I have a few different species, two I recently acquired being an Avic "Berbic River", which is probably the cutest spider in the world! and an Avic "Peru Purple". I have seen both of these go for it and I wouldn't say they are particularly fast, not compared to the like of some of the pokies or an OBT for example. I have to add, seeing them run full pelt across the floor is quite an amusing sight, I love how the avics move. I would highly recommend getting an Avic. Avic or a Versi as a next spider, I absolutely adore mine!
