  • Info required on Selenobrachys Philipinus

    Hi.
I just need some extra info on this Tarantula. Does anyone know the growth rate and eventual adult size? If anyone owns one or has kept one,can you tell me of any problems you might of encountered if any. Cheers

Orange mean things Paul they have a weird "true" spider appearence about them which is quite weird and fascinating at the same time.

Had a couple, eventual size was around 4.5 inches with a slender build, gave them 8 inches of substrate (kept slightly damp) in cereal containers to which they burrowed quite efficiently.
They were quite secretive and were rarely seen fully out of their burrows whilst we had them.
Ate well on a standard "irregular feeding regimen" as i like to simulate natural prey availability in captivity, and grew nicely with it too.

The only "problem" i had was an escape attempt by the female when feeding (i swear she waited till she felt a difference in air movement before she made her move )

They're quite fast over ground, seem to use frantic "power, speed and agility" to scale obsticles rather than use physical grip and deliberate footholds.

Gave them to a friend to breed when ready, he phoned soon after and said the male had matured !! I'd not even noticed whilst they were here. Think he tried to breed them and the male was a wuss ... i'll remind him if he's in chat or on the phone and he can possibly comment on here for you.

      Thanks for the info Colin!
I have a spiderling arriving tuesday. Damn, why is it that something can be so brightly coloured yet hardly ever seen I generally stay away from the burrowers for that reason alone,I remember not seeing my S.Crassipes for 3 months and my King baboon made a mockery of that

Damn, I wish I had ordered some of them now haha, was contemplating whether to but I thought I would play it safe with a C. Andersoni instead

Tis me that Colin passed the pair to.They are very shy spiders which rely on speed to get away (an adult moves at "blink and you miss it") but will suddenly get very snappy when put in a corner. I found them difficult to pair due to the nervous problems they have, it took several introduction attempts to get this far :

good luck with that pairing, Chris!!!

i had one a while back, raised from decent sized sling to MM with no females in sight at the time, unfortunately. i found him shy and retiring, creative (as to home design) and a good eater.

i just got a tiny sling from the spidershop, and it's hilarious how small and grey it is. she has the nice spindly appearance though already, very thin legs. very cute at this size and not very fast. also doesn't appear to be that shy either yet.

and Dan, there's nothing wrong with a lovely andersoni!!! i have a lovely adult female that i believe i got from Colin a while back! she's so pretty i entered her at the BTS, but sadly she lost to a stunning H minax
