    VIP Guest INFO

Here is some information on our VIP Guest

    Marie-Louise Celerier

    Presenting her lecture on:
The Palm-tree tarantula Stromatopelma griseipes/calceata and other spiders of the Lamto savannah ecosystem in Ivory Coast

Since 2006 I am a retired Professor of the Universities in Biology and Ecolog -Physiology , so I was a researcher and also a teacher all along my career . I took part in the ecological study of an African savannah ecosystem initiated by Professor Maxime Lamotte and so beginning in 1968 I shared the study of the spiders of the Lamto savannah from Ivory Coast with Patrick Blandin through our thesis. I have been in Lamto during all the summer 1971 to learn more about species characteristics of the savannah in their wild environment, to capture spiders and to try to breed them. I came back to France with numerous spiders and then I worked under laboratory conditions at the University of Paris 6. I worked at the individuals level comparing the energy budgets of different species and my colleague worked at the populations level then we integrated our results toward the ecosystem to try to understand the place and role of the spiders in the savannah. I kept the Stromatopelma tarantulas at the end of the study because I wished to let them to continue their life cycle in captivity and to know more about their growth, reproduction etc., but I also began to be involved in researches on saprophagous as woodlice and centipedes in teams studying ecology of forest ecosystems around Paris . In the same time breeders of tarantulas offered me spiders and I also received animals from customs seizures arriving to the National Natural History Museum of Paris . As a consequence I bred different species of tarantulas from Africa,South America and Asia and then appeared very stimulating opportunities of collaboration with chemists and biochemists to study the venoms and toxins of tarantulas .

    Regards
    Marie-Lousie Celerier
