  • H maculata sling burrow or arboreal

    Hi

I have an H Maculata sling in my care I've just rehoused it to a bigger pot
I have given it a deep is substrate as it burrowed in its last pot. Since it has been in its new enclosure it has molted but has not ventured out of its web. I have the substrate damp could this be the reason why it's not ventured down yet or do I remove some of the substrate?

Not ventured out of it web ? Thats about normal for a H mac LOL
They seem to dig a burrow when they are small slings but as they get larger they seem to get more arborial.

Juvenile Heteroscodra maculata are arboreal in the wild - seen them living in folds in tree trunks

In captivity they may appear to burrow, but that's more an artifact of keeping them in pots. An arboreal species will excavate out the detritus in a rot hole, which is essentially what a sling is doing in a pot (making the best retreat out of the options it has avilable to it).

My H.mac sling is housed in a tall jar and it always chooses to dig into the substrate and web up whatever piece of cork bark or debris there is on the floor. Iv rehoused it to see if i could persuade it to live higher, but it always prefers the ground. Could be a captivity thing like Richard says. All i know is that its absolutely fine doing what its doing and growing very quickly :-
          David Attenborough:
‘It seems to me that the issue of conservation of the natural world is something that can unite humanity if people know enough about it. Persuade them to change the way in which they behave, to change the view that gross materialism and the search for material wealth is not the only thing in life.’
