  • Do some species of Tarantula Bask

The reason I ask is because my male grammostola comes out from hiding every time I turn my halogen heater on. Its right strange, I switch it on and he comes out from hiding or moves from where ever he is sitting to tilting his body up against the side wall of the tank showing the dark area of his under body to the warmth of the heater, this happens almost every time I turn it on. He definitely seems to be basking in the warmth! The room is at around 23 deg C at the moment so its not cold, is basking in the warmth of the sun or on a warm patch of soil rock or something, what you would expect to see?????

They certainly do. In the wild many burrowing species are observed catching some rays in the entrance to their burrows as the sun goes down, and locate their homes accordingly. Some of my vivs catch partial sunlight for short periods and I've often seen the spiders sit in the sunny corner of the tank when it happens.
