  • Haplopelma Vonwirthi

Hi all, just received my H Vonwirthi today, it was a replacement for the Haplopelma.sp as there was no stock left, i didn't mind as its a nice T, as far as i understand its OK to keep these the same as most other Haplopelmas is this correct? also it would seem that there is some conflicting info relating to these in that they could possibly be a mis identified H minax are there any differences between the Minax and Vonwirthi if so what are they and is this species likely to be reclassified?

is this species likely to be reclassified
The only person who could tell you that is the boffin type who is working on this species at the monent but anything can happen but i wouldnt hold my breath if i was you LOL

    All I can say is . . . Watch your fingers !!!

This is one of the "bite first and see what it was later" types.

Hi peter thanks for the reply, do you have any Haplopelma's? if so do you keep them at room temp like all ya other T's? i was trying to find some info on them but seemed to have more luck with H Minax which said they can stand brief drops to 70f but should be kept at higher temps,,,,i have been keeping all mine at room temp between 19 and 23c and my stirmi seems absolutely fine with it, he's active eats well is digging plenty so ummm for a T happy i guess lol,,,i was thinking this would be OK for the H Vonwirthi what do you think. i have provisions for heating her enclosure should i need to bring up the temp a little.....and OMG these things are rapid...and seem to be able to launch them selfs like bloody sprinters, when i was putting it into its new enclosure it laterally jumped into the plastic tub i was using to move it, and sprinted straight up the side, i did make some funny noises at that point lol......

From what I know, the name H.vonwirthi is invalid as the paper describing the species was not up to scratch. We just have H.sp."Vietnam". H.minax doesnt help itself by supposedly having regional variation, but generally we think of adult females as large, nearly jet black monsters while sp."Vietnam" has much more visible patterning on the abdomen, pale stripes on the patellas and dark orange setae, particularly on the spinnerets. I had some issues myself with some Haplopelma that were supposed to be H.longipes but were clearly not, but also different to sp."Vietnam". Heres some pictures as an example :

        sp."Vietnam"

Theres not much out there yet about physical differences between the two, as colour alone is no use, we just have to wait for the published paper which sorts it out.

As for keeping them, its pretty simple. Mine are at 24-25 during the day and room temps at night. They live in tubs filled with enough moist substrate for them to burrow in and that suits them fine

excellent it would seem from the photos that mine matches the top picture, so from reading the max size for adult females will be around the 5.5" to 6" would that be about right? do minax get bigger? and what's the venom potency for H.sp"vietnam" i would guess similar to other haplopelma species??

I've never been bitten by one Aragorn, I don't think I would want to be either. They seem to be more willing to come out of hiding to chase me off than most.

By the way, I made a mistake, H.vonwirthi is a valid name going by the WSC. Can anyone help with the confusion there, as to why it's often sold as sp."Vietnam" (I've seen it more as this, thats why I went by Volker von Wirth and Boris Strifflers paper which mentions it). If they are one and the same, should Schmidts name be used in the meanwhile absolutely, or is H.vonwirthi considered to be different from H.sp."Vietnam"? If so, how so? Nice and confusing as usual.

as a noob i am begging to understand that there can be some real issues with correctly identifying species in this hobby it seems like a mine field and the worst of it is the pressure for supply and demand which can be an evil thing when it comes to the correct tagging labelling and identifying of species when collected, the result must surly be hybridisation permanently muddying the gene pool....?????

You can never be certain from images alone, but if I was a gambling man I'd be happy to put a tenner on it being H.vonwirthi.
