Is there an organisation that maintains a list of all currently known tarantula species (as far as this is possible, which would clearly be an enormous task)? And if so, is such a list published anywhere on a regular basis? I often see phrases like "There are over 800 / approximately 900 / 928 (etc.) known tarantula species...", but is this information, once it has been collected from articles and reports that are published across the various scholarly journals, compiled by an organisation and then regularly updated when new finds are discovered? My gut feeling is that the situation is possibly so complicated that nobody would attempt to make a 'definitive' list, but I'd be very interested to know if it has been tried.
