  • Hysterocrates sp. Nigeria, correct ID please..

Hello BTS, this is my first time using this board, and after trying to contact Mr. R. Gallon and being unsuccessful I had the urge to try and get an ID here, with the hope that he would eventually swing by.
    All other ID are welcome.

    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I just recently had a "H.hercules" imported from Nigeria, along with a couple of rainbow crabs, the seller took her sac, but she will lay another in future.

She has extremely thin leg IV, Round domed carapace and is reddish brown which turns olive brown under the light, the juveniles and sub adults also have undersized leg IV like a Goliath.

Their mannerisms are the same as a Goliath, they don't violently bite like say a King Baboon or my H.gigas, they raise up like a blondi and stay there, striking only if you push it, they are generally more calm, you can persuade it with tongs and your hand if you wanted and it moves calmly, I don't recommend it though.

She is similar in leg span to my 8.3" king baboon, but her carapace is somewhat wider.
    Dimensions of 36-37mm x 32mm... I would say 7 3/4 legspan.
I have seen my sellers smaller sp too, i'm inclined to say H. sp. nigeria, rather than "hercules"

She is eating a whole chick, which she snatched from my tongs, never seen a T that hungry before, so she needs some fattening up. Sorry about the angle, taken with my iPad

Am I right in saying until a complete revision is done, I'll not know for sure.

(The pictured spider #5 is the wild caught male of this species)

Never ended up hearing from Richard..

Has H. sp. Nigeria been identified yet?

Is this spider the same one that Richard described as the dark femured sp. from Nigeria that isn't the real hercules?
Does this make it an undescribed sp? Or is it something known.

I have Andrew Smiths Baboon Spiders and the cheliceral granulation confirms it is Hysterocrates... The size and characteristics do not match any other spider listed there, besides hercules, although it mentions all legs of approximate thickness.. My sp. has thinner leg IV, leg I is the largest and thickest.

The only other spider listed in the overlapping region is H. laticeps, although also having a rounded carapace they are much smaller with thicker rear legs.

I'm just curious what these guys are if they are not hercules... Which from the picture of the museum specimen, I would say does not match.

Russ Gurley has an unusual specimen pictured in his book "A color ID of Tarantulas of the world" I have a copy if anyone wishes me to post a pic of it.

Any other way to get into contact with Mr. Gallon?

I have already read he is not good at checking emails (his own words)
Would be nice to get some light on the matter of the possibilities.

Yes, I knew that is the current correct ID thus far (regardless of being sold as "hercules"), i'm wondering because I know Richard is working a revision of the African taxa, I thought there might be an update about soon.. Last time I heard of some clarification on Hysterocrates was back in 06, I thought we would have some development by now.. Maybe i'm pissing in the wind by asking because of the massive mix up in the hobby.
