        Update App

        Hi Craig,

I purchased the app as soon as I saw the topic..great app, needs some slight tweaks, King Baboons (Pelinobius muticus) adult weight is less than Hysterocrates gigas being one.

Please can you allow us to add our own scientific names to the my Tarantulas section, I have organised the diary part for molt logs.. But dislike seeing null null on my "Hysterocrates sp. Nigeria" - The My Tarantulas and upload your own photos is a MAJOR selling point for this app.. So thanks for that!

I can't wait for my Selenotypus sp. Nebo and Phlogiellus sp. Goliath to be added too.
Allowing us to drop those sp. into the leg span sections would provide tons of customisation and to me make this app an essential "Tarantuladex"

          Hi Ryan,

We have a massive update being pushed out this weekend followed by more species every week. Should take 7 days to reach your phone which would probably coincide with the BTS show.

We are also launching an Android version in a few days, so all very busy.

Thanks for all your feedback and support.

          Keep your eyes peeled

So what are the unidentified Pamphobeteus sp you picked up in a reptile shop and you identifed as the Chicken spider (though no one else has been able to, and you have supplied no material for ID) what are they labeled as?

                Ray,

I have indeed recently at the BTS show supplied type specimens to Martin who I believe will chase up with Andrew, perhaps best to have a chat about this to him directly. I'd hope we have enough material by now to formerly describe and put this topic to rest either way.

                  Hi Craig/Steve

They are only type specimens if found to be a different species and the specimens used for the description. Since the CBD? CBB? regulations came into place last year I hope copies of any permits were supplied with them, if not no museum will accept them as specimens type or otherwise, but since yours were from a pet shop you could be OK.

I know of one friend in Colombia who is working on Pamphobeteus at present so he might be interested, but he will also need copies of permits, so this might never get to bed.

So what are they on your app?

                    Hi Ray,

Unfortunately these are many many years old(kept dried in the loft!) around 2004, passed over from collectors through a 3rd party in a batch of Pamphobeteus antinous as unknown species, one gravid specimen clearly stood out from that of P.antinous or P.nigricolor. I do not normally condone the taking of or accept wild species, don't collect at all and I don't keep them anymore but prefer to observe in the wild or research behaviour which is my area of interest and where I most enjoy seeing them.

I have done my bit, handed over what I have, if it's not good enough, then I suggest a team head to Manu and Tambopata and sort this out once and for all with the right intentions. If anything, the ocular arrangement and 4th leg femur observations of the specimens can help justify such a venture. There is so much yet to be described and in some cases reclassified, I believe Dr. Rogerio Bertani, Instituto Butantan, Brazil is undertaking the arduous task of a complete revision of the genus, I wish I had the time to contribute more, as it is an area that is of great interest to me, but my career is consuming the greater part of my life these days. I would say, that if you, Martin Nicholas and Andrew Smith feel passionate enough about this then you shouldn't waste time trying to resolve this. Most importantly it would be one step towards listing under CITES to stop collectors stripping the region.

In the meantime, certain undescribed species will be listed in the interest of educating people, though I personally don't want to go down a route of listing batches of suspected species unless I am clear it is widely accepted. The wonderful thing about mobile versus a print publication, is much like the web, we can continually revise, so this is a project in development, but we need to start somewhere. I will continue to improve and expand upon, when I have the time(!) and reinvest all accrued revenue back into research and development as thus far we have yet to see one publically accessible repository of consistent data on the Theraphosidae family. It stimulates discussion which is a good thing and I have received an enormous amount of interest, support from hobbyists and most importantly input from experts in the field.

I certainly wouldn't call myself a qualified arachnologist though there are many so called arachnologists who aren't technical qualified either, but with over 20 years experience in the field and well read enough, I'd like to believe I can validate or surface such a claim. However, I'm afraid it's for others like yourself, R.Gallon, A.Smith etc who make a living in this field to formerly argue this amongst each other, though I will help in which ever way I can.

                      Hi Steve / Craig

Is this a suedonym or are two of you useing the same login? dosent matter

Unfortunately this "new" legislation is backdated to 1992.............so without permits.......no museum will accept specimens..............but yours are unidentifed pet trade material without location data.......

I dont have time to examine more Pamphos at present, i am doing the types for a friend but would be really squeezed to do more specimens..............especially as they are only pet trade specimens.

I will post a link to the website asap

As the last couple of comments are divulging from the original post maybe one of the mods can split this into two posts or tag this onto the end of the original Chicken spider thread?

Right now back to the topic in question.

For all those who are wondering, the next iPhone database update has been submitted and can take around 7-10 days to appear on the Appstore, especially now because App reviews will take longer the next few weeks.
