hi,i have an adult female p.ornata i think.it seems alot brighter than the other p.ornatas i can see on the web,so i wasnt sure if it was a p.regalis.how can i tell the difference?thanx
just as a quick hijack, i got a p regalis yesterday and saw this post. the one i have doesnt seem to have a band under the abdomen, its pretty much all the same colour. is there any way it could be a p regalis without the stripe or have i been fiddled? the guy at the store is into his spiders and has a huge collection and this was one of his own. always seemed very helpful and knowlegeable so i cant imagine he would make a mistake this easily.
i'll try and post a pic of the underside later. the topside can be seen on my other post, hi, query from a newbie.
cheers

How big is it Dan? The sub abdominal band isn't clear on small spiderlings.
There is no way it could be a P. regalis without the stripe, but it may not be developed enough for you to be able to see it
this an adult female. easily 7inches from front toe to back.
any idea how to tell the difference of the others. the pictures look very similar on the above link for a lot of them.

The picture at the bottom shows the pale band clearly. Adult P. regalis should show this band.
Maybe if you posted a reasonably clear pictures, top and underside, someone could help you ID it. Although it's not recommended to ID from a picture, pokies have fairly distinctive leg markings which can help.
It could actually be a Poecilotheria pedersani they are very similar to P regalis but dont have a pale strip along the underside of the abdomen, I think. I will double check but as far as i remember P pedersani is very much like a p regalis. You havent been really swindled it is still a great specimen but could be problemtic if you were to have it bred in the future and accidentally hybridised it.
these are the best pics i can get, a couple of the underneath and top. they are a bit bright because of the flash but all the detail is there.
sorry about the size!!

And he piled upon the whale's white hump, the sum of all the rage and hate felt by his whole race. If his chest had been a cannon, he would have shot his heart upon it.
from looking at that site, i would guess p. fasciata due to the mainly white patch on the abdomen. all the others seem to be patterned here, but mine is almost completely white. still not sure though!
i called the guy i got her from and he said he thought it was indian ornamental, that was what he bought it as, and so did the person he bought it off! he did say he was going to research it over the next few days and let me know.
cheers for the help.
