  • Housing 'Growing on' slings?

    Hi gang

    After some more advice please!

I have a nice collection of slings, which is likely to get larger over the coming couple of months, all are doing well and are eating etc etc.

I have a question though about what sort of housing you move the slings on to once they start to grow bigger? (Currently housed in the transparent 35mm film cannisters)

I have a total of 5 slings of about 1cm in size in these pots and I also have an Avic sling of almost 2cm in the slightly larger size pots that Lee sells in thespidershop (68mm?)

I have just moved my G, pulchra (2-3cm) into a bigger glass enclosure which is about 5"x4" which seems massive for it but it does seem happy enough in there.

I was wondering what types of housing people use for this size spider as the in-between sizes are a nightmare to get something neither too small nor too big??

Also, what do people recommend for arboreal slings in the way of setup in these smaller pots?

My Avic is in the bigger pot and originally I placed some pieces of wood in there. After a while they started to look a little mouldy and as a result I removed them (The Avic seemed to prefer just sitting o the side of the container anyway!)

Should I be trying to put anything in the pots for the arboreals to climb on or should I leave furnishing to a minimum until they have grown on a bit more?

I know this post is massive but I needed to get some ideas from you about what the best solution would be!

    Any recommendations appreciated!

For smaller size spiders I tend to use food containers, about 10 cm tall by 4-5 cm wide, which I can use for terrestrials, arboreals and burrowers. For slightly larger terrestrials I use thespidershops 1.3lt and 3lt containers. And for slightly larger arboreals / burrowers I use dog chew containers! Each is about 10cm wide by 20-25cm tall (all measurements are from memory!) with a screw top lid. Poke a few holes in and voila!

    Mike.

      Hi Jo,

All my slings are kept in 10cm diameter little food pots (4 for a £1) from Woolworth's. I just drill come holes in them.

There nice and clear too, and the lids fit really well.

I ain't keen on keeping slings in film canisters, theres not enough room in them to sneeze in my opinion.

I know it's the norm though to keep them in there, so I guess it's personal choice.

I believe for he 1cm slings they are plenty enough but I agree when it comes to anything bigger

I bought some food containers from Home and Bargain IIRC and they have a rather decent lid that locks with latches. Comes in a bout 3 or 4 different sizes.

Although these are to large for slings, for juveniles i use the clear tubs with locking lids that are 'REALLY HANDY' if you know what i mean, I have even considered these for adult spiders as they stack superbly! The only downside is they are not very pretty as display tanks.

                Who??? Lol!

And the only thing i hate about plastic tubs is the fact they are rubbish to take photo's through!!

Colin! You're the photographer, we need your advice!! lol!

It's fine taking the lid off something like my T, blondi who seems to bask in the adoration but if I want to take some pics of my slings currently in transit, some of this are nippy bu99ers and I daren't risk taking lids off to take their picture!!

That's the one reason i wanted glass was to be able to see them extra clearly!

Go to wilkos, buy a cheap "clip Frame" of the size you require. discard the hardboard backing and wrapping.

When you pry of the top of your "tub" slide the glass over the opening (between top and tub to prevent escape) and take the picture through this.
Reverse procedure to get top back on.

                    God damn you're clever!

                    Blummin' brilliant idea!

Especially as i would love some pics of my new arrivals (Today) but all of a VERY flighty disposition!!

Will have a bash at that later!

                    Thanks Colin!

I just take the lids of my slings, and take the picture.

Non of mine have the urge to do a runner. If you do feel a little warey, wait till there feeding and then they even stay still for ya!

You even found that with your Pokies?? Scared what they're going to do once the lids are off to feed them!!

Transferring them from transit pot to new home was ok, bit traumatic but no more than usual! Don't get me wrong, not scared of the bite (I'm pierced, I'm used to the pain!!) just terrified they'll get loose and the cats will try and squoosh them!
