Ray, the problem is that only some people are actually willing to listen. Its an awful shame that the avic genus is in such a mess because there are so many people who like the genus.

I have a number of avic slings here but I'm only certain that the versicolor's, purpurea and peru purple's are what they are supposed to be.

I also have braunshauseni, sp. bicegoi, sp. amazonica brazil and sp. guyana which could all turn out to be just about anything. These are all named as such and will be kept that way until there may be a chance of knowing whether they are the real thing. The braunshauseni probably are the real mccoy, the amazonica brazil I will possibly know when they grow a fair bit but not holding my breath, bicegoi will stay on the pet shelf as there is no such spider in the hobby as will the sp. guyana because there are so many different sp. guyana that I wouldnt know which one it could possibly be.

I'm fascinated by the avic's and if they turn out to be the real deal then great but if not then they will be well taken care of for their life span on the pet shelf.

I think Becky feels the same as I do on this subject. It wont stop us getting avics but we know what can be used for possible future breedings and what will stay on the pet shelf thanks to your post on T-Store.

I hope more people do the same.

          See some of you there,

          Mike.

p.s if you are interested to see what Peter Grabowitz may have available take a look at www.polyped.de for his latest list, it's all in scientific names with any additional info in German but still understandable though.

            Hi Dave
There are major identification problems with the avic genus. They are so mixed up that you never really know what you are buying especially as slings.
Have a read of Ray's posts here

I was pretty restrained this year. I picked up more equipment than livestock. Almost.

Four new vivs from Custom Aquaria. Heat mats, cork tubes, vermiculite etc were all fun to get home on the bus.

Also brought home 1 x P regalis, 1 x H murinus (an unexpected gift) 1 x Scolopendra morsitans, 2 x Hierodula membranacea, 6 x fruit beetles (can't remember the species, my GF wanted them!), 2 x giant millipedes (in the process of mating).

Got home in time to rescue my Idolomantis diabolica which had decided to start his ultimate moult hanging from a branch so low down that his head was actually resting on the substrate.

There is a danger in buying "guaranteed sexed spiders" in so much as that sexed by whom? Lets face it its 50:50 either male or female. Forgive me for stating the obvious but very few dealers use the shed skin method to sex prefering to use the more cavalier "by eye" method.
The truth is that when you buy anything from anybody you should insist on a reciept that states clearly what you have bought and what you expect. If it then turns out to be something else you have evidence to argue with. This applies to all things, spiders, washing machines , in fact everthing.

If the seller refuses to supply such a reciept then ask yourself this .Do you really want to be dealing with them?

The seller in question does indeed trade at the BTS Exhibition and steps will be taken to inform of his committment to the BTS members. As I have stated elsewhere on other forums being part of the BTS give us a starting point to approach dealers like this. We have no jusisdiction over dealers but being a member of the BTS does give you the knowledge that we will address the issue on your behalf. We are not a police force but we will argue on members behalf.

Sorry to hear about your ornata, keep it and wait for the next show he comes to, then ask for your money back AND some compensation for the rearing of the specimen, about £30 for half a year sounds about right.

I think the first thing to be done is to lodge a complaint with the AES:

There were already complaints lodged against him at the show for similar dealings, I dont know how many makes a ban, but the more the merrier.

Surely if he is ripping people off, (and he has been for about 4 years that i know off, yep me included) being banned from the BTS exhibition might make him "buck up his ideas", ?

It seems to me he comes over here, sells anything to anyone (well bigginers and kids) goes of again as he knows many peopel will forget by the time they se him again, and he can always deny he sold it to you and play the "not understanding English to well" card.

I dont know if Jack Harris is doing another Winter Kempton show but i think he also comes to that one, other wise its May at the BTS (unless you go abroad).

How many times does a dealer have to con BTS members to be banned from the exhibition?

Sorry had to get it out,........................anyone got some stout rope??

Ok. I dont like going all out for confrontation and naming names but seeing as everyone else isn't afraid to do so, here goes........
Peter Grabowitz tried to sell my 9 year old son a Pokie Miranda for 125 euros at the EAS at York in June, It was a Pokie Ragalis! luckily my lad is not stupid so declined on his '''generous''' offer but unfortunatly bought a ''''''''gaurenteed'''''' female Verdezi from him for £20. The so called Verdezi moulted into a strapping male Brachypelma Vagans in July! I took my son and his spider to AES Kempton on saturday and confronted Mr Grabowitz, he was not helpful at all.
He took out the spider in question & looked underneath and said ''this a male Vagans'' I know I told him but you sold it as a female Verdezi! Thats ok he said, I need a male Vagans and took the spider away. My son looked horrified and I called him back to say it was my little boys T and he wanted to keep him anyway, On that note Mr Grabowitz THROUGH the spider back into its tank banging it against the side of the tub and came out with ''Well. F**k You then'' that was to a 9 year old child!!!!!!!!!!
I will never deal with such an arogant and discusting person ever again, its people like him who give the exotics world a bad name.
Thankyou so much to the gentleman who came to our rescue and confronted him afterwards
Thanks for listening to me sound off & thank goodness we have the BTS.
                              Jay x

will be avoiding buying from that chap!

i must add my accolades to Lee from the spider shop! at this show i bought three spiders, and at the last i bought loads of things, and i've been very happy with them all.
i've noticed he's careful about giving a guaranteed sexing, which is cool.
and the mousepad was a bonus! has a lovely pic of a P. pulcher, which naturally makes me want one lol
