really crazy reading about the Avicularia classification mystery!
also really enjoyed the article about Hysterocrates spp and their semi communal natures. the male offering himself to the female was actually rather touching.
the one issue i'm curious about with regards to the bites was what would've happened if the wound had been immersed immediately in very hot water. the first instance was running water (no mention of temperature) and alcohol...the second involved a cold compress.
does T venom break down in heat like scorpion venom?
not that i want to try personally

Got mine too...it's great! I really enjoyed Ray G's letter...that was great, it's like wise Master Yoda educating a bright but headstrong pupil; a respectfully written, beautifully dissected study with salient points...clever responses always make for a good read...could we have a *Ray's 'Rant'* section each quarter?
(Note: I use the word *rant* in the lightest sense of the word, no offence intended...it just has a nice humourous ring to it!! LOL)Comment

Presumably any protein/amino acid components would be denatured by high temperatures, alcohol, acids or vigerous movement. The problem is that your hand is also made of protein, so attemps to denature the venom would also denature your hand - lol.Originally posted by James Box View Post

Hi all , I have been asked to point out by John Greaves the designer of the hegagonal tank that Ray G refers to in his letter to the editor that
"he does not suggest that the pygmy bulbs be used as a heat source but merely as an emergency backup if the heating in his room should fail. He accepts that he should have perhaps made this clear in his article. He further points out that he uses vermiculite has his preffered substrate."
Personal addendum
I would add that John has kept tarantulas for many years and we are all continuing to learn. Ray has the right to comment on his set up just as John has the right to reply. Its what the BTS is all about.
Having spoken to John at length last night I can see his reasoning behind the bulbs. They are not intended to be used at length but should the electricty fails in his home he has the bulbs rigged to an emegency generator that will come on when the electricty trips out. Belt and braces admittedly but how many of us can boast such an emergency system?

Because our house is connected to the mains supply via a dodgy 30 year old stepdown transformer off an 11,000v pole in a field, the electricity here can be fairly ropey at times.
