    We are assuming that the smaller spider was genuinely female. The possibility remains that it could have been an immature male - This happens much more often than you would think.

    Anyway, many adult male spiders will have a larger leg span than the female, but a smaller body build. The general rule of thumb is if the carapace on both spiders is roughly the same, then it's worth trying.

        You've mistaken my post. I was referring to the "female" that was killed by the male you mentioned.

              just to check is the directly above specimen female? It's 4.5" LS and seems to have very fuzzy legs for a female? I have not been able to get a good pic for vent sexing and don't yet have a molt to sex by molt

                another pic from diff angle of the new H. mac which was sold to me as female....Lets hope it is otherwise my male is going to be disappointed
