David, thanks for posting your results. i'm sorry your experiment cost you two slings, though
you've done invaluable work though, but it's always a shame to lose any spiders, even if the result is an increase of knowledge.

Seen this thread on Arachnoboards? The pics on the first page look very much like Martin and Craigs spider (very P antinuous dark with those red setae only at the very back), but 1 or 2 of the pics ands the pic on the last page of the thread, look completely different. There seem to be red hairs all ovet the abdomen and I don't see those very thickend femurs on the fourth leg????

          very interesting, hadn't seen that!
was very "amused" by the side-tracking caused by someone insisting that Martin Nicholl "told them so"...and when i looked at where he linked to, it was exactly the case...a few of the Americans didnt believe Martin's video documentary...but they DID believe a few photos from a north american? rather insulting madness!

but yes...the thing that's interesting to me is that there's a chance, given the range, that there are two large species that can, to some point, potentially live communally.

            Chicken Spider Update

Apologies to everyone who has tried to contact me recently, I have been very busy at work as an executive and rarely get time for my hobbies. I realise there are many who would love to get their hands on this species, hopefully it won't be too long now.

Just to inform everyone that I will be sending Martin a Male and Female Specimen on Monday which should also worm it's way to the Natural History Museum for formal identification, so fingers crossed, we might have a confirmed species by mid year.

Ray, Richard please consult with Martin on his findings next week.

            All the very best

For what it's worth, these were taken from "Common Names Of Arachnids 2003", Fifth Edition by The American Arachnological Society Committee on Common Names of Arachnids

Pamphobeteus antinous - Bolivian blueleg tarantula
Pamphobeteus fortis - Colombian brown tarantula
Pamphobeteus insignis - Colombian purplebloom tarantula
Pamphobeteus nigricolor - common bluebloom tarantula
Pamphobeteus ornatus - Colombian pinkbloom tarantula
                            Pamphobeteus vespertinus - redbloom tarantula

                            But that still leaves:
                            P. augusti
                            P. ferox
                            P. petersi
                            P. ultramarinus – Ecuadorian birdeater?

i think the additional problem lies in the fact that alot of those scientific names are not confirmed!
