i'd just stick with those names, even if they are a mouthful
at least people will know what you're on about!

I'm still confused about something though. Is it wrong to call it Pamphobeteus platyomma, but fine too call it Pamphobeteus sp. 'Platyomma'?

Not sure what you mean by that, all those scientific names are in the World Spider Catalog. Isn't that confirmation enough?

Well, also according to the World Spider catalog Pamphobeteus platyomma was a valid name, but it has now been synonymized with Vitalius wacketi.

Ray Gabriel has posted on this subject on the first page:

in short, no. not while this genus is such a mystery, at any rate. the WSC itself will change as the taxonomy is cleared up for this genus, if i haven't completely misunderstand the purpose of the WSC, or Ray's comments on the above thread.

also, despite the American Arachnological society's efforts, there are no "official" common names, hence the inherent problem with using common names in the first place.

I saw that on the WSC, but I'm not familiar with how it works. So is my T officially a Vitalius wacketi? And if now classified by the WSC, what is it's common name? (not that I like working with common names, but that's what the dealers will often use).

After reading Ray's comments on the thread posted by James above, I'm more confused (aren't we all?).

Here's a quote from Eric Reynolds, which pretty much sums up your spider.

This is NOT the spider that was described as P. platyomma and then transfered to Vitalius... that is not a valid name anymore anyway (Nomina dubia).

              V. wacketi is a totally different spider and a valid species. It's likely not in the hobby.
So I guess Pamphobeteus sp. "platyomma", it is!

Ok thanks for clearing that up Ray.
Hey btw, I was officially the 10000th (I think!) viewer between the 2 chicken spider threads, does that still count for the free sling Craig??

                        Hi All

I spoke with Martin at the lectures, and guess what???

No specimens have arrived from Craig.

                        Craig,

Can you post some pics of your set up with these Chicken Spiders please, from a distance so we can see the whole enclosure, what it is supported on, the hood to hold the lights etc.

Ray, Richard please consult with Martin on his findings next week.

What exactly did Martin have to say about that then Ray? Did they just not hook up or was he just let down?
