Hello all, this is my first post, so please forgive me for not introducing myself earlier,(for those that dont know me) before asking a question.
My son (Sonny) would like to enter one of his many spiders in the competition on sunday but..........................................
when he bought it, the incorrect name was on its tank! He is not a daft kid by any means, he knew that the spider he was buying was NOT the same as indicated on its tank which was 'Ornithoctonus Aureotibialis' (Asian Yellow Hair) He had not seen this type of spider before so he said he would like to buy it anyway. It took all his pocket money plus a top up from me! After paying out £35 he was very pleased with her.
She is a very bright & metalically looking golden brown & black with vivid bright orange bands around her leg joints. I cannot take a picture as she is a prolific burrower. He has looked alover the internet for similar pics but we cannot find any.
My son would like to show her at the exhibition this sunday but is unable to put an identification to her.
Would it be possible for someone to 'have a go' at ID'ing her b4 the show so he can enter her?
When he bought her she was a rather ''scruffy'' 'bug' in a 3" x 3" clear glass pot with no substrate (she is 3") and in extremelly poor condition, after re-housing her into a more adequate home and with planty of TLC & 12 hours a day of UV lighting this tarantula is a very fat & extremellly healthy beautiful animal which he is very proud of.
Any help would be greatfully welcomed.
    Thanks,
    Jay (Sonny's mum)

      Hi Jay,

The last common name I saw O. aureotibialis listed under was Thai Yellow Fringe, not come across Asian Yellow Hair before (you know my thoughts on common names by now ).

Without even a picture it could be anything. Haplopelma albostriatum or some other Haplopelma sp. (O. aureotibialis was originally thought to be a Haplopelma sp. until redescribed by von Wirth & Striffler if I remember correctly), or something else entirely.

I'm sure there will be someone there who can help though

      Phil.

        two answers here:

        1. members need to show their cards at the door, trust me we know if your a member or not. ( Big Lee can be very persuasive....)
normmaly babes in arms and prams dont pay and children are up to 12.
( No you cant carry your 16 year old son in ,who has a moustache)

        2. with regard to unidentified spiders being entered just write on the tank that you are unsure of then species and what it was purchased as. This will enable us to designate it to the correct catergory.

I'm with you on the common name scenario Phil.
The only time they should be used is if you're talking to someone who knows nothing about spiders, then the common name (in general) gives an idea what it looks like, comes from or does, even then they're vague !!
i.e chilli rose (pink colour on it from chilli ??), Yellow desert scorpion (a yellow scorpion from the desert??)

anyway, step off soapbox and back on track.......
The last thing i remember reading about the O Aureotibiatis gave a common name of the Thai Black !!

think it was something to do with breeding on giantspiders.com.

Just place it in 'best asian' category and the judges should be able to id what it is when looking at it as im sure there are many asian fanatics that will be there.

Chilli on a Chile Rose? Absurd!

On topic: I'm going. I'll probably be walking round in a happy daze, or fighting Richard for a C. cyanopubescens.

Silly question, but will anyone be selling crickets etc there on Sunday? I'm running low, but if I can get some Sunday it will save me an extra trip out.

I would imagine the dudes at Monkfield will be doing bulk deals as usual.

Having a bit of a problem, the brakes broke on my van going down the M4 coming back from heathrow so not sure how I am going to get there yet. Seem to be having a run of bag luck. Below though is some ideas of what we will have with us.

Socotra Island Blue Baboons (Monocentropus balfouri)

not sure yet depends on how I end up going to the show. The size of the vechile will limit what I take. If I end up hitching it will b whatever I can fit in my pockets

I will have a few with me, all younger females.
