I fear even a reply to that and I would be adding the BTS to my banned list!

Hi Oli, actually, I believe it is 'illegal' to send spiders through the post... only inverts to be used as food items are allowed (ask me about the Post Office story when I see you at the BTS Show!!). But I fully agree with your initial point...that the 'sensationalism' gives a totally untrue angle about T's. I once phoned up a journalist from one of the Sunday papers that wrote an article on T's also. It was very misleading (of course!) and I felt I had to try to at least redress the balance! Guess what... he accused me of 'nitpicking', never once admitting that he might be wrong. It'll always happen...people exagerating stories in order to sell papers, books, and reputations!

Just to take up on earlier comments, last month I e-mailed the BBC department for science and nature. Ok so my e-mail was ignored as well (I think) but if we want to promote tarantulas then surely the answer is to get organisations like the BBC on side. One e-mail asking for a (short) documentary series portraying the truth about "Tarantulas of the World" could be ignored. 50 e-mails might not. Think how many people that would educate, not to mention the profits from retail sales of the DVD for the BBC! just a thought

Oh and Louise, please don't discuss whips with strange men, didn't your mother warn you about such people?!
sigpicHate is for people who find thinking a little too complicated!

From someone whos has had more arguements with the media than the Oasis brothers trust me its not worth the effort. Many, many years ago as a new keeper I though I could change the opinion of the world towards our little friends.
I did TV (Central news) and got portrayed as being "the loony at the end ". I did a number of childrens shows but all the wanted was to scare the kids with something big and hairy (....leave it Tesco.....). Even Radio, where I sat nicely between the late great Adam Faith discussing his then flagging carrer and a peice on incontenence in the elderly. ( Some would say I actually know more about the latter)
In short Tarantulas are what they are. The mass population have an irrational fear of them and you wont change it. I spent two hours once at a Phobia session and all we got back was " Yes we hear what your saying, we know they wont kill you and they are in no way dangerous but come on they are spiders ....urrgggg". Not every one loves these guys
At the BTS we still fight on and we convert many but for every convert there are a million others who will not or dont want to believe. This Sunday we will be at Drusillas Zoo in East Sussex promoting tarantulas and the BTS. It will be fun and I will sya the same thing two thousand times but I can guarantee when they all go home they wont have heard a word.

In the words of our illustrious Chairman....."Todays news is tomorrows chip paper"
So enjoy our charges and sit back and be magnanomous when you see drivel in the press.

              Ray

Ahh, but Nicola, you still aren't going to get people watching the program OR buying the DVD if tarantulas don't *float their boat* anyway!! Or were you planning to have a subliminal advertising campaign being run into the everyday humdrum of tv life? lol

Like I say. You can lead a horse to water but you wont make it drink. Some people I am afraid will never belive what we say.....

And the task won't get any easier while we have media entities who seem to live by the motto of: "Never believe what you publish, and never publish what you believe"!!

Ok, fair enough about the press. Though I believe Mr. Attenborough (I always get their first names mixed up) did a documentary a few years ago on "bugs" and people warched that. Maybe the best way forward is through DVDs like Andrew Smith has started doing. Now if we could get Mark Pennell to do one during his autumn Borneo trips that would be good. He'd enjoy that! (sorry for my sense of humor)

Yup Nicola, David Attenborough does present wonderful nature type programs, but when it comes to being very specific (in some folks eyes), ie total focus on spiders, they shut their mental gates and refuse to be educated. Much the same as toddlers who become overtired and unwilling to accept *no* for an answer, the more you push phobics and those with closed minds into seeing your point of view, the more they determinedly dig their heels in and decide that all of us spider keepers are weird and pushy!!
Patience wins the day with some people, as is the way with the real phobics I have had visit me for *therapy* so to speak. Local people here are aware I have spiders and snakes, and from time to time the phobia pushes them into the morbid curiosity phase as they hear me talk about the arachno-kids here, referring to them by *pet names*, ie Elvira, Gangly Griff, Juno etc...it seems to trigger a reaction to meet the funny little souls with the even funnier owner!! From that point onwards, when they are the ones wanting to delve further, their minds stay opened...but it would be a different story if I went out to drag unwilling folks in for a visit.
